THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE, Barrow, John D.
2 Barrow, John D. THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE
NY Basic Books 1994 0465053548 / 9780465053544 First Edition. 1 Soft Cover Fine+ with no dust jacket
Softcover. 8vo (approx 5.5 x 9.25"). 150 pp. A volume in the Science Masters Series. 1st Printing. Illustrated with drawings. Publisher's glossy pictorial wraps. This is an unmarked copy, with only the slightest shelf-wear. FINE. There is no more profound, enduring, or fascinating question in all of science than that of how time, space, and matter began. Now John Barrow, who has been at the cutting edge of research in this area and has written extensively about it, guides readers on a journey to the beginning of time, into a world of temperatures and densities so high that we cannot re-create them in the laboratory. With new insights, he draws us into the latest speculative theories about the nature of time and the inflationary universe, explains wormholes, showing how they bear upon the fact of our own existence, and considers whether there was a singularity at the inception of the universe. Here is a treatment so up-to-date and intellectually rich, dealing with ideas and speculation at the farthest frontier of science, that neither novice nor expert will want to miss what Barrow has to say. He shows how scientists, by exploring crucial points of contact between the behavior of matter during its early history and the observed structure of the universe today, came to understand more fully all the entities in the universe from elementary particles to great clusters of galaxies. "Writing with rare stylistic verve and a real commitment to lucid explanations of complex ideas, John D. Barrow has produced a book that "expertly encapsulates our knowledge, speculations, and ques- tions about the origins of the universe" John Paulos, author of Innumeracy) and is as "up- to-date as the fixing of the Hubble telescope" (Martin Gardner) . 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Harry L. Shipman is the Annie Jump Cannon Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Delaware. For many years he has studied white dwarf stars, the final stage in the life cycle of low mass stars like our sun. In these objects matter reaches extreme densities, since the mass of the sun is compressed into a volume that is the size of the earth and densities reach 107 grams per cubic centimeter. His particular interest is in using the fundamental properties of these stars to test our understanding of their basic nature, in their chemical composition, and in their pulsations. Collaborating with John Gizis, he has opened up some research on brown dwarfs, failed stars which are bigger than Jupiter yet too small for nuclear fusion in their cores. Professor Shipman received his B. A. In Astronomy from Harvard University in 1969; his M. S. In Astronomy from California Institute of Technology in 1970; and his Ph. D. In Astronomy from California Institute of Technology in 1971. . 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 309 pp

THE STARS: Their Structure and Evolution, Tayler, Roger John
15 Tayler, Roger John THE STARS: Their Structure and Evolution
Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1994 0521458854 / 9780521458856 Second Edition. 1 Soft Cover Fine with no dust jacket
Softcover in publisher's glossy wraps. 8vo. xiii, (i) , 241 pp. Illustrated with numerous B&W drawings, charts and graphs. The volume is in excellent condition, unopened, tight and square, with a remainder mark on the bottom edge, else as new. FINE. Roger J. Tayler is Professor of Astronomy and Director of Astronomy Centre at the University of Sussex. This textbook gives a clear account of the manner in which knowledge in many branches of physics, such as gravitation, thermodynamics, atomic physics, and nuclear physics, can be combined to gain an understanding of the structure and evolution of stars. A major aim is to present the subject as one in which advances are still being made. The first half is an account of the observational properties of stars and a discussion of the equations that govern their structure. The second part discusses recent theoretical work on stellar evolution. The successes of the theory are stressed, but attention is also drawn to phenomena that are not completely understood. This is a new edition of a widely-used textbook first published in 1970. New topics include mass loss from stars and close binary stars. Contents include: Preface; Symbols; Numerical values; 1. Introduction; 2. Observational properties of stars; 3. The equations of stellar structure; 4. The physics of stellar interiors; 5. The structure of main sequence evolution; 6. Early post-main-sequence evolution and the ages of star clusters; 7. Mass loss from stars; 8. Close binary stars; 9. Advanced evolutionary phases; 10. The final stages of stellar evolution: white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes; 11. Concluding remarks; Appendices; Index. . 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xiii, (i), 241 pp

SPACE TIME INFINITY: The Smithsonian Views the Universe, Trefil, James S.
17 Trefil, James S. SPACE TIME INFINITY: The Smithsonian Views the Universe
Washington, DC Smithsonian Books 1985 0394548434 / 9780394548432 Stated First Edition. First Printing Hard Cover Fine in Fine dust jacket
FIRST EDITION (stated), FIRST PRINTING (Number Line: 54321). Hardcover with unclipped dust jacket. 4to (10.25 x 10.25"). 255 pp. Bound in publisher's full blue cloth, gilt lettering on spine. Illustrated with over 300 full-color photographs and illustrations. Introductory Essays by Kenneth L. Franklin. The volume and the dust jacket are both in excellent condition, with no ownership marks, tears or other flaws. FINE/FINE. Beginning as near as possible to "Time Zero" - a fraction of a millisecond after the moment of creation - Dr. Trefil, the eminent physicist, takes us on an exhilarating tour through time and space, bringing us finally to the brink of mankind's first glimpses of infinity. Moving from the ancients, the Neolithic 'howling barbarian' school of archaeology, to the moderns, the new physicists who are on the verge of formulating a 'grand unification theory' as powerful as Einstein's, linking the atom to the force of gravity and to the evolution of stars and galaxies, he traces not only the history of astronomy but also the evolution of the universe. His scientifically accurate and stylistically captivating, lucid explanations tie the most distant phenomena and complex theories to what is familiar, engaging our active participation. Starting with humankind's earliest views of the cosmos recorded in Egypt, Babylon, and Greece, and evidence from megalithic sites such as Stonehenge, Trefil quickly traces the rise of Western astronomy to contemporary views of stars, galaxies, and infinity. Issues of cosmology, astrophysics, and cosmology are treated lucidly and richly illustrated with hundreds of colored pictures and diagrams. Important unsolved scientific problems are explored, as well as questions such as the existence of extraterrestrial life. With the rush of information brought by each new space probe, increasingly sophisticated technology, and breakthroughs in the field of theoretical physics, today's scientists regard the nature and origins -and the likely future - of the universe very differently than did astronomers even a few years ago. Each day Smithsonian Institution scientists and their affiliates, at the center of the nation's push to the edges of the universe, receive the latest astronomical research from around the world, and work to develop advanced equipment to further this research. This 255-page hardback is spectacularly illustrated in color with historic images, photographs, computer enhanced cosmic images, explanatory diagrams, and speculative art, showing all aspects of the study of the universe, in true Smithsonian quality and style. Professor Trefil is the author of From Atoms to Quarks (1980) ; Are We Alone? (1981) ; Living in Space (1981) ; The Moment of Creation (1983) ; The Unexpected Vista (1983) ; A Scientist at the Seashore (1984) ; Space, Time, Infinity (1985) ; Meditations at 10, 000 Feet (1986) ; Meditations at Sunset (1987) ; The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy (with others) (1988) ; The Dark Side of the Universe (1988) ; Reading the Mind of God (1989) ; One Thousand and One Things Everyone Should Know About Science (1991) ; Science Matters (1991) ; Are We Unique?
