London The Hogarth Press and The Institute of Psycho-Analysis 1953-1974 First Printing Hard Cover Near Fine with no dust jacket
Publisher's full blue cloth, gilt lettering on spines. The Standard Edition was translated from the German under the general editorship of James Strachey, in collaboration with Anna Freud, assisted by Alix Strachey and Alan Tyson. It consists of 24 volumes, and it was originally published by the Hogarth Press in London in 1953-1974. Unlike the German Gesammelte Werke, the Standard Edition contains critical footnotes by the editors. This is the first collected edition, in which "the primary aim was to be the rendering of [Freud's] meaning with the greatest possible accuracy." Volumes 4, 5, and 7 were the first to be published in 1953, followed by 10, 18, 13, 2, and 17 in 1955; then two volumes came out per year from 1957 to 1964; volume 1 was published in 1966 and the Index, the last volume (Volume 24), was finally issued in 1974. The contents, by volume, are: Volume 1. Pre-Analytic publications and unpublished drafts (1886-1897); Volume 2. Studies on Hysteria (1893-1895); Volume 3.
