17 Bourrienne, Louis Antoine Fauvelet de; Edgar Sanderson (ed) Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte: From the French of F. De Bourrienne, Private Secretary to Napoleon, and Minister of State under the Directory, the Consulate, the Empire and the Restoration
London Hutchinson & Co 1904 First Edition Thus. 1 Half-Leather Near Fine with no dust jacket
Elegantly bound in contemporary half red Morocco (by A & F Denny, in the Strand), five raised bands, with blind-stamped gilt decoration in five of the six compartments, and lettering, gilt, in the remaining compartment. Illustrated with nine photogravure portraits. Edited, with notes and a chronological table by Edgar Sanderson, M. A. "The present translation was undertaken for the purpose of compressing into one volume the life of the life of perhaps the most extraordinary man the world has ever produced. Bourrienne was eminently qualified to be the biographer of Napoleon. He had lived on terms of the closest intimacy with him from his boyhood; and from the official situation of private secretary which he afterwards held under him when general, consul and emperor he was present at the planning and execution of many of the extraordinary deeds which so rapidly succeeded each other during that eventful period. He was able to observe the gradual development and working out of those striking and brilliant ideas which were communicated to him in the frankness of confidential intimacy, at the moment of their birth, but which were not always matured and acted upon until a subsequent period." A beautiful little book.. All plates clean and bright, only very minor foxing on frontis; spine and covers almost as new, former owner's armorial bookplate (Alington) on fep, gift inscription (to Baron Alington, Easter, 1909) and former owner's neat stamp on blank preliminary page. This book was formerly the property of Captain Napier George Henry Sturt, 3rd Baron Alington (1896-1940), a British peer, the son of Humphrey Sturt, 2nd Baron Alington, with his arms on the attached bookplate. A beautifully preserved, fresh copy. NEAR FINE.. Photogravure Portraits. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. vii, 540 pp

18 Bourrienne, Louis Antoine Fauvelet de; R. W. Phipps (ed) Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte (Four Volumes, complete, in Slipcase)
NY Charles Scribner's Sons 1906 Revised Edition. 1 Hard Cover Fine in Good dust jacket
Four Hardcover volumes with dust jackets, in slipcase. Publisher's full blue cloth, gilt lettering on spines, gilt Napoleonic medallions on covers, top edges gilt, fore-edges deckle. "New and Revised Edition, with Numerous Illustrations." "Bourrienne shows us the really important side of Napoleon's character. He tells us of the long hours in the Cabinet, of the never-resting activity of the Consul, of Napoleon's dreams, no ignoble dreams and often realised, of great labours of peace as well as of war. He is a witness, and the more valuable as a reluctant one, to the marvellous powers of the man who, if not the greatest, was at least the one most fully endowed with every great quality of mind and body the world has ever seen." . The volumes are in virtually perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, tight, square and clean. The dust jackets, now in Mylar, are moderately chipped, some with loss at the heads of the spines and separating along some of the edges. The original slipcase, with its original label intact, is also separating along the edges and has some old tape repairs. Both the just jackets and the slipcase are extremely scarce. FINE/GOOD. .
