Magnificently bound in tan half calf over marbled boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (c. 1920), spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on pale green labels in two compartments, intricated gilt tooling in remainder, gilt borders on covers, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 170 illustrations from Boydell's edition. John Boydell (1720-1804) was an 18th-century British publisher noted for his reproductions of engravings. Between 1791 and 1805, Boydell published a "magnificent and accurate" edition of the complete works of Shakespeare. To illustrate the edition and to provide images for the folio, Boydell obtained the assistance of the most eminent painters and engravers of the day. Artists included Richard Westall, Thomas Stothard, George Romney, Henry Fuseli, Benjamin West, Angelica Kauffman, Robert Smirke, John Opie, and Boydell's nephew and business partner, Josiah Boydell. Among the engravers were Francesco Bartolozzi and Thomas Kirk.. All 15 volumes are in virtually perfect condition, tight, square, unmarked, and clean. Rebound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for J. W.
