5 Bradford, T[homas] G[amaliel] A Comprehensive Atlas: Geographical, Historical & Commercial
Boston William D. Ticknor 1835 First Printing Hard Cover Good with no dust jacket
Quarter bound in modern sheep over original marbled boards. Illustrated with hand-colored frontispiece, engraved title-page, and 76 engraved plates and maps (some outlined in contemporary color). Thomas Gamaliel Bradford (1802-1927) was an American cartographer.Bradford was born in 1802 in Boston. He revised and republished Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Abridgement of Universal Geography, Modern & Ancient which was originally created by Adrian Balbi. In 1835, he published this work, A Comprehensive Atlas: Geographical, Historical & Commercial. His work is held in the collection of the Library of Congress and the Boston Public Library. Unlike many atlases of the period, the present work includes extensive text. Each engraving is accompanied by explanatory articles on the history, economics and geography of the area, as well as a great deal of contemporary statistical information. Although the American map and atlas publishing industry was centered in Philadelphia and New York during the 19th century, Boston also developed a thriving map trade aimed primarily at the educational market. One of the first Bostonians to engage in atlas compilation was Thomas Bradford, who published a number of World and United States atlases during the 1830s. Bradford entered the atlas trade after first working as an assistant editor of the America Encyclopedia. Using a similar encyclopedic format, his atlas publications were some of the first American atlases where the maps were supplemented with lengthy geographical descriptions and statistical tables. Another distinguishing feature of his publications was the innovative design of the frontispieces and title pages. In the example shown here, rather than personifying the continents with the classical icons that were used so frequently during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, he illustrated "five varieties of the human race" with their native costume-- American, African, Caucasian, Malay, and Mongol. In departing from the traditional European approach to atlas compilation where maps of European countries dominated the publication, the contents and arrangement of maps in this atlas reflect a decidedly American bias. Almost half of the maps pertain to North America, starting with maps of Maine, New Hampshire-Vermont, and Massachusetts, proceeding south to Florida and west to the Mississippi, followed by Canada and Mexico. Also published by Wiley & Long in New York, and T. T. Ash at Philadelphia. [Sabin 7260][Martin & Martin 31][Phillips Atlases 770][Ristow 271][Rumsey 3467; 2643] Detailed list of Illustrations: Frontispiece (in color): The five varieties of the human race. A History of Europe (Two Volumes, Complete), Fisher, H. A. L.
6 Fisher, H. A. L. A History of Europe (Two Volumes, Complete)
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1952 Stated First Edition. First Printing Hard Cover Very Good with no dust jacket
Publisher's full magenta cloth, gilt lettering on spines, t.e.g. (red). Illustrated with B&W maps and six excellent fold-out color maps. His History of Europe was first published in 1935 in three volumes. A revised and enlarged edition was published in two volumes in 1938, and this edition in two volumes in 1962. Volume One: From the Earliest Times to 1713 (First Edition, 1952); Volume Two: From The Beginning of the 18th Century to 1937 (First Edition, 1952). Herbert Albert Laurens Fisher OM PC FRS, (1865-1940) was an English historian, educator, and Liberal politician. He served as President of the Board of Education in David Lloyd George's 1916 to 1922 coalition government. Fisher died in St Thomas's Hospital, London, on 18 April 1940 after having been knocked down by a lorry and seriously injured the previous week, while on his way to sit on a Conscientious Objectors' Tribunal during the blackout. Some of his possessions, including his library and some of his clothing, remained at New College. In 1943, Operation Mincemeat, a British Intelligence operation to deceive enemy forces, undertook the invention of a false Royal Marines officer, whose body was to be dropped at sea in the hope the false intelligence it carried would be believed. As the fictitious Major Martin was to be a man of some means, he required quality underwear, but with rationing this was difficult to obtain, and the intelligence officers were unwilling to donate their own. Fisher's was obtained, and the corpse used in the deception, dressed in Fisher's quality woollen underpants, succeeded in misleading German Intelligence.. Both volumes show only mild shelf-wear, the corners of volume one bumped, gilt on spines faded, endpapers and fore-edges foxed, some light underlining throughout first few pages only; all of the maps are in perfect condition. VERY GOOD. . Maps. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. xi, (iii), 1269, xlv pp
