Price: $120.00

Quantity: 1 available

B&W Illustrations (10) & Maps (2) Edited with an introduction, notes, and glossary by Valerie Krishna. Preface by Rossell Hope Robbins. This is not a translation of the Morte Arthure, but the much rarer critical edition which provides the text in the original Middle English as found in the original medieval document (the Thornton manuscript from the Lincoln Cathedral Library). Bound in original publisher's red-orange embossed cloth, with titles on the spine, gilt, and embossed decoration of knights on the cover. Fore-edge deckle. As new condition, sans dust jacket (as issued?). The complete text is given in the original Middle English (not regularized, but true Middle English). The Glossary, which runs to more than 130 pages, is a treasure trove of information. The illustrations are presented in a section of very high quality glossy black and white plates (10 illustrations & two maps). "Since the Thornton Manuscript contains no illustrations, the following illustrations have been taken from manuscripts containing Wace's version of the Arthurian story and Lydgate's account of Lady Fortune." As follows: "King Arthur arrives at court", "King Arthur asleep on board ship", "King Arthur battles the Emperor of Rome", Lady Fortune and Her Wheel", King Arthur is mortally wounded", etc. Printed on Warren 66 Antique Offset, chosen for its high degree of permanency, good quality, and acid-free characteristics.. 8vo (9.5 x 6.5").
