Elegantly bound in contemporary half red Morocco (by A & F Denny, in the Strand), five raised bands, with blind-stamped gilt decoration in five of the six compartments, and lettering, gilt, in the remaining compartment. Illustrated with nine photogravure portraits. Edited, with notes and a chronological table by Edgar Sanderson, M. A. "The present translation was undertaken for the purpose of compressing into one volume the life of the life of perhaps the most extraordinary man the world has ever produced. Bourrienne was eminently qualified to be the biographer of Napoleon. He had lived on terms of the closest intimacy with him from his boyhood; and from the official situation of private secretary which he afterwards held under him when general, consul and emperor he was present at the planning and execution of many of the extraordinary deeds which so rapidly succeeded each other during that eventful period. He was able to observe the gradual development and working out of those striking and brilliant ideas which were communicated to him in the frankness of confidential intimacy, at the moment of their birth, but which were not always matured and acted upon until a subsequent period." A beautiful little book.. All plates clean and bright, only very minor foxing on frontis; spine and covers almost as new, former owner's armorial bookplate (Alington) on fep, gift inscription (to Baron Alington, Easter, 1909) and former owner's neat stamp on blank preliminary page. This book was formerly the property of Captain Napier George Henry Sturt, 3rd Baron Alington (1896-1940), a British peer, the son of Humphrey Sturt, 2nd Baron Alington, with his arms on the attached bookplate. A beautifully preserved, fresh copy. NEAR FINE.. Photogravure Portraits. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. vii, 540 pp
