Quarter bound in ivory cloth over lavender cloth; gilt lettering and rosette decoration on each spine; embossed gilt armorial shield on each front cover; TEG; fore-edge deckle. 8vo. xlii, (iv), 335; ix, (i), 422 pp. Illustrated with 49 half-tone plates and 13 excellent tissue-protected photogravures. Includes a detailed Chronological Table of Events. Several former owners' names, and a gift inscription dated Christmas 1891, on fep and ffeps, otherwise unmarked. The spines are darkened and lightly worn at the heads and heels; the boards are lightly soiled. The volumes are tight and square, the interiors are unmarked, all the tissue-guards are in place and all of the illustrations are clean and bright. VERY GOOD. Volume One contains: (1) The Foundation of the Abbey, (2) The Coronations, (3) The Royal Tombs, and (4) The Monuments. Volume Two contains (1) The Monuments (continued); and (2) Before and After the Reformation. Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, D.D. (1815-1881) was an English churchman and Dean of Westminster, known as Dean Stanley. His position was that of a Broad Churchman and he was the author of works on Church History and Westminster Abbey.
